Artists working to transform Greenock underpass

Artists working to transform a Greenock underpass want Inverclyde residents to suggest local heroes as part of the project. Fin MacRae and Al MacInnes of Dufi Art have been commissioned by regeneration company Riverside Inverclyde to improve the tunnel at West Stewart Street and its approaches.

Part of the design they have come up with includes lots of small circular plaques which will feature names of Inverclyde residents past and present who people think should be recognised.

“We would really like to hear about the unexpected people – not just the ones who are well-known. Maybe it’s a barmaid in a local pub who is always cheerful or a good neighbour.”

The plaques will be part of a steel oak tree feature on one of the walls at the underpass and will also be among steel roots which will spread from the oak tree up the stairs and ramp, through the tunnel and out the other side towards the Oak Mall.

The circles will have the names of local heroes laser-etched on to them plus a brief description of who the people are. The project is part of town centre improvement work being carried out by Riverside Inverclyde.

The busy subway, with nearby bus stances, is seen as one of the major gateways of the town centre.
